CC Sabathia returned from the disabled list with 6 shutout innings in tonight’s 6-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.
CC Sabathia went onto the disabled list with a slight groin strain prior to the All-Star break and his return was like he never left. With pinpoint control and a Blue Jays lineup without the recently injured Jose Bautista, Sabathia went 6 innings with 6 strikeouts and no runs on just 87 pitches. With the Yankees offense on point as usual, the decision was well in hand until some struggles by relievers Chad Qualls and Clay Rapada. After ending the shutout when he surrendered a sacrifice fly in the 8th, Qualls would get one out in his second inning of work along with a double and a walk. Clay Rapada would replace Qualls and would give up rookie Anthony Gose’s first major league hit on a bunt single that should have produced an out. With the bases loaded and the potential tying run on deck, Rafael Soriano was called upon for another save opportunity in the middle of the 9th inning. Five pitches from the Yankees closer got the final 2 outs as J.P. Arencibia lined into an unassisted double play at first base by Mark Teixeira.
Andruw Jones supplied the early Yankees offense with a three-run home run in the 2nd inning. This home run made it the 41st straight game that the Yankees have scored at least 3 runs, the longest streak in franchise history. The Yankees would continue scoring with a 3-run 7th inning highlighted by back-to-back doubles by Chris Stewart and Derek Jeter for two runs. Robinson Cano continued his hot hitting as a 2nd inning single extended his hitting streak to a career-high 20 games.
