Yankees Game 91: Tanaka leads to victory

Boston Red Sox 1 – New York Yankees 3

Looking for the first win of the second half and to stave off a sweep in the rivalry, the Yankees turn to Tanaka.

In the first inning, Masahiro Tanaka served up a solo home run to Dustin Pedroia to put the Yankees in an early deficit. For the Red Sox, David Price worked through three rough innings without a run scoring but the Yankees got to Price yet again.

With one out in the fourth inning, Didi GregoriusΒ hit a single and came around to score on a sharp double to left field by Starlin Castro to tie the game at one. After the second out, Austin RomineΒ lined a single beyond Price and off the glove of Pedroia for a run-scoring single to put the Yankees ahead. Brett Gardner added a single and Jacoby Ellsbury added an insurance run with a single to center field.

Following the second inning, Masahiro Tanaka retired the order in three of the last four innings of his start as he held the Red Sox down and maintained the lead after receiving it in the fourth inning.

In six innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed one run on three hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

With a lead after six innings, Dellin Betances came in for a perfect seventh inning.

Andrew Miller came on for the eighth inning and allowed a one-out walk but set the Red Sox down to keep the two-run lead intact.

Aroldis Chapman faced the middle of the order in the ninth inning and got the first out before a walk of David Ortiz. The walk did nothing but make the end quicker as Chapman got Hanley Ramirez to ground into an inning-ending double play to claim the save in tonight’s victory.
