Yankees Game 94: Carlos Beltran bunts & blasts homer behind Pineda in win

Baltimore Orioles 0 – New York Yankees 5

Looking to keep on a roll, the Yankees looked for the fourth win in a row and to ensure a series win with the Baltimore Orioles.

In nearly a month, the Yankees were not able to score in the first inning. The last time the Yankees plated a run in the first inning was against the Colorado Rockies on June 24. The counter will reset after the first inning against the Orioles’ Yovani Gallardo. Brett Gardner led off with a fly ball deep to right that hit the glove of Joey Rickard and fell to the warning track dirt, allowing Gardner to race around the bases for a leadoff triple.

After the first out, Carlos Beltran brought home Gardner with a sacrifice fly to center, putting the Yankees ahead by one.

Michael Pineda pitched a perfect first inning but a poorly timed deflection started Pineda in a poor direction in the second inning. J.J. Hardy hit a single off the glove of Pineda and a throwing error by Starlin Castro put Hardy at second. A walk of Nolan Reimold put two in scoring position but a strikeout of Ryan Flaherty denied the Orioles a run. In the fourth inning, Michael Pineda gave up a single to Adam Jones and a walk to Mark Trumbo. After a strikeout of Pedro Alvarez, J.J. Hardy loaded the bases with a single. Needing a strikeout, Pineda did one better by striking out Reimold and Flaherty to strand the bases loaded. Pineda added two more strikeouts in a scoreless sixth inning to wrap up a good start in which he buckled down in big spots.

In six scoreless innings, Michael Pineda allowed five hits with two walks and struck out eight.

Mark Teixeira made his return to the lineup with a bang. After a walk in the first inning, Teixeira came up in the fourth inning with a solo home run to right to double the Yankees lead. Yovani Gallardo nearly lost this game in the sixth inning. Jacoby Ellsbury got on base with a single and Carlos Beltran got on base with the unexpected push bunt down the third base line. A walk of Brian McCann loaded the bases and a walk of Mark Teixeira plated a run. But Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro spoiled a potential big inning with a strikeout and double play.

The Yankees added a run in the seventh inning when Ronald Torreyes got on with a one-out triple and scored on the Brett Gardner sacrifice fly. Following his push bunt single in the sixth, Carlos Beltran decided to swing against reliever Chaz Roe and did he ever, with a solo home run into the second deck of right field in the eighth inning.

One run or five runs, the Yankees bullpen locked down tonight’s game. After a scoreless inning by Dellin Betances, Nick Goody and Chasen Shreve added an inning each to wrap up tonight’s game. This win made it four in a row and put the Yankees two games over the .500 record.
