Texas Rangers 4 — New York Yankees 2

Ineffectiveness at the plate snapped the Yankees three game win streak since the All-Star break.

In the first inning, against Texas Rangers’ starter Mils Mikolas, Derek Jeter would be the first base runner through a walk. He would move over to second on a balk and an infield single by Jacoby Ellsbury put runners on the corners with one out. Carlos Beltran would productively sacrifice fly to center field and the Yankees were ahead by one.

In the second inning, the mind-boggling defense of the New York Yankees started with the pitcher.

after getting the first out ofย  the second inning, Shane Greene would drop a throw from first baseman Kelly Johnson for the first error of the game. Greene would get a strikeout for the second out but a ground ball to the pitcher that would normally be routine, was anything but that. Under-handing the throw to first, Greene would lob it high over the head of Johnson and the ball would go into right field, putting runners on the corners with his second error of the inning. Shane Greene would keep the Rangers off the board with a strikeout.

The third inning would feature another error by the Yankees defense, only this time, it cost Shane Greene the lead.

With one out in the third, Shin-Soo Choo would hit a double and Elvis Andrus followed with a single to put runners on the corners. Derek Jeter would field a ground ball and attempt to turn a double play on Adrian Beltre but Brian Roberts would drop the ball. Choo would score on the third error of the game and it was tied.

Shane Greene would commit his third error of the game in the fourth inning but it would not come back to haunt him either.

Jacoby Ellsbury would put the Yankees ahead with his second hit, the only two against Mikolas through the first four innings. The second hit of the game by Ellsbury was his eighth home run of the season. The Yankees would have a prime scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. With one out, Francisco Cervelli and Zelous Wheeler hit a pair of singles. Brett Gardner would walk to load the bases for Derek Jeter. Unfortunately for the Yankees, the captain would ground into an inning-ending double play.

After the double play in the fifth inning, Miles Mikolas would retire the last eight batters he faced before exiting the game. In 7.1 innings, Miles Mikolas allowed two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts.

In the sixth inning, Shane Greene kept the game close despite his three errors. He got the first two outs of the inning but the third out would elude the Yankees starter. Designated hitter Jake Smolinski would hit a single and left fielder Jim Adduci would hit a single to put two on. Catcher Geovany Soto would hit a single to left field and just like that, the game was tied. Shane Green would be replaced with two on and two out for lefty specialist Matt Thornton. Second baseman Rougned Odor would hit a single between third and short and the Rangers took the lead. The next lefty, Choo, would hit a single to center field and the Rangers had an insurance run. Adam Warren would be needed to get the last out of the inning but the damage was done.

In 5.2 innings, Shane Greene allowed four runs on five hits while walking one and striking out five. The major lapses in his game were from throwing the ball, not pitching it.

The Yankees would commit their fifth error of the game in the seventh inning. Adrian Beltre hit a ground ball to short and Derek Jeter made a poor throw that pulled Johnson off of first base.

The five errors committed by the Yankees is the most since 1998.

The Yankees would have two on in the ninth inning against closer Joakim Soria but pinch-hitter Yangervis Solarte would fly out harmlessly to left field to end the short winning streak after the break.
