We’ve all had a day to decompress and try to figure out why the Red Sox would give David Price and his zero wins in eight playoff starts $217 million. Maybe it was his 5.12 ERA in October that enticed them to give him the largest pitcher contract in history? Who knows? What I do know is, Yankees fans need to step back from the ledge. The dude loves the AL East, having pitched for the Rays, Blue Jays and now the Sox. Facing him multiple times a year is nothing new and his numbers against the Yanks aren’t anything to write home about. In his eight year career he has started 30 games pitching 191.2 innings, pretty much an entire season. He holds a 13-7 record with a 4.04 ERA, 19 homers and a 173/62 strikeout-to-walk ratio.
Here’s how the Yanks lineup, as it sits today, has fared against Price in his career:
Dustin Ackley: 2-11 (.182), 1 double
Carlos Beltran: 6-24 (.250), 1 triple, 2 RBI
Jacoby Ellsbury: 24-68 (.353), 5 doubles, 2 triples, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Brett Gardner: 6-29 (.207), 3 RBI
Didi Gregorius: 3-11 (.273),1 RBI
Chase Headley: 8-19 (.421),2 doubles, 1 triple, 3 RBI
Aaron Hicks: 4-13 (.308), 2 doubles
Brian McCann: 10-29 (.345), 3 HR, 7 RBI
Alex Rodriguez: 14-59 (.308), 4 doubles, 1 triples, 1 HR, 4 RBI
Brendan Ryan: 4-14 (.286), 2 doubles
Mark Teixeira: 13-64 (.203), 3 doubles, 3 HR, 8 RBI
OVERALL: 94-341 (.275), 19 doubles, 5 triples, 8 HR, 32 RBI.
Those numbers, combined with his 0-8 record and 5.12 ERA in the playoffs, don’t really scare me. Nothing he’s done against the Bombers makes you stop and say, “wow.” We’ve seen him plenty of times throughout his career. We are very familiar with him and know how to hit him. It’s not like he’s a young stud coming out of the Minors who we’ve never seen and need a few games to figure out. We have his number. Plus, the MAJOR regret the Sox front office is going to have on the back end of this contract should have all the Bronx Faithful grinning like the Grinch.
