Injury news and notes

It seems like there’s a new update on a new injury every day in Yankee-land. Here are a few notes on the wounded:

Alex Rodriguez: A-Rod, who experienced tightness in his left quad, underwent an MRI yesterday in New York. The results showed a Grade 1 strain, which will keep him on the DL until further notice according to Joel Sherman of the NY Post. A-Rod will go down to Tampa for rest and treatment. There is no timetable on his return.

Derek Jeter: The Captain stood into the box yesterday as Andy Pettitte and Phil Hughes each threw bullpen sessions. Jeter hasn’t been cleared to hit yet, but may be given the go-ahead to begin today in Texas. The biggest hurdle he still needs to clear is running the bases, something the Yankees will probably have him test out later on in the week. Jeter is eligible to return from the DL on Saturday in the Bronx against Tampa.

Curtis Granderson: Grandy took BP down in Tampa over the weekend, as he is still recovering from a broken bone in his hand, according to Bryan Hoch. Manager Joe Girardi said that Granderson should be able to play in simulated games soon. Since the injury was in his hand, Granderson has been able to run and throw, keeping his legs and arm in good shape. Therefore, his rehab process isn’t expected to be as long. He recently said that he’s optimistic he can return before July is over.

David Phelps: Phelps threw a bullpen session this past weekend in Tampa according to Hoch. He’s on the 15-day DL with a forearm strain. The Yankees don’t know what their plans are with him left, but Girardi said he “left as a starter, and we envision him as a starter.”

Jayson Nix: Nix had six at-bats in a simulated game on Saturday but did not test his strained right hamstring on the bases, according to Hoch.

Francisco Cervelli: According to Hoch, Cervelli took dry swings and continued to throw, saying that his arm is feeling better every day. Cervelli has been out since April with a broken hand, but experienced a setback recently due to a stress reaction in his elbow.
