May 1 return unlikely for Jeter

The Yankees and captain Derek Jeter had originally looked at May 1 as a possible return date, but now that seems very unlikely. Yesterday, manager Joe Girardi said in an interview that Jeter “will be back when he’s back,” according to Yanks beat writer Bryan Hoch.

Jeter has been taking batting practice and ground balls everyday, but is not close to returning to game-action. The Yankees will not rush him back, as that was a big reason why he didn’t start the season in the first place.

Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira are more likely to return to the Bronx before Jeter, who may not be back until the very end of May.
