Pirela to be activated Wednesday

*UPDATE:

The Yankees have officially activated Jose Pirela from the DL. To make room on the roster, Gregorio Petit has been placed on the 15-day DL with a hand contusion. Pirela will start tonight at second base.

Jose Pirela is with the big league club up in Toronto, but will be activated on Wednesday according to Mark Feinsand of the Daily News. Pirela had been on a rehab assignment after being sidelined with a concussion which he suffered in spring training.

The 25-year-old utility man finally seems healthy after he ran into the centerfield wall against the Mets back in March. Pirela didn’t hit in his first four rehab games at the High-A and Double-A levels, but turned it on when he got to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. In 19 at-bats there, Pirela unleashed a slash line ofย .579/.600/.947. The Yankees were finally ready to call him up.

No roster move has been announced yet, but Gregorio Petit would most likely be the odd man out. With Stephen Drew struggling, Pirela could force his way into the lineup at second base, giving the Yankees a shot in the arm they need at that position.
