Report: Didi Gregorius to play for Netherlands in WBC

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, Yankees shortstop Didi Gregorius is among a handful of players that will play for the Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic which begins March 6.

Gregorius, who turns 27 next month, will participate in his first WBC after missing out in 2013. While with the Diamondbacks, he strained his ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm getting ready for the tournament and couldn’t participate.

The Curacao native had his best season as a pro last year, hitting .276/.304/.447 with 20 homers and 70 RBI, cementing himself as the Yankees’ everyday shortstop. Joining him on Team Netherlands will be Xander Bogaerts, Jonathan Schoop, Andrelton Simmons and Jurickson Profar.

First-round action for the Netherlands gets underway on March 7 against Korea at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul.
