WATCH: Gary Sanchez homers in first at-bat in minors

Gary Sanchez began his rehab assignment on Tuesday night, and didn’t waste any time in showing that he’s recovering nicely from a biceps injury that has sidelined him since April 8.

In his first at-bat for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders against the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (PHI affiliate), Sanchez launched an opposite field solo-homer off former first overall pick, Mark Appel.

This is certainly a welcome sight for the Yankees and their fans, as Sanchez is in-line to possibly return in time for the Cubs series next weekend at Wrigley. Barring any setbacks, Joe Girardi said that Sanchez will slot into the number two spot in the lineup, pushing Austin Romine into a backup role.

While many predicted the Yankees’ offense would suffer in Sanchez’s absence, Romine has swung the bat well evidenced by his .315/.350/.463 slash line entering play on Tuesday. He’s also handled the pitching staff well, too.
