Yankees acquire Reid Brignac

The Yankees have made another move to add some depth at the big league level, as they have acquired utility man Reid Brignac from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash. Shortstop Alberto Gonzalez has been designated for assignment.

Brignac, 27, represents versatility and a slight upgrade offensively from Gonzalez. In his career, Brignac has played shortstop, second base and the outfield. He spent five years with the AL East rival Rays, before being traded to Colorado in February. He was designated for assignment on Thursday, so the Yankees scooped him up.

A lefty, New York hopes he can utilize the short-porch in right field. However, he is more known for his glove than his bat. This season, Brignac is hitting .250 with a homer and six RBIs. For his career, he is a .228 hitter. He is expected to be with the team for tomorrow’s series finale with the Jays.
