Yankees have not offered contract extension to Girardi or Cashman

The New York Yankees are going to be without a General Manager and Manager after the final out of the 2017 World Series. Despite that, the front office has yet to offer a contract extension to Brian Cashman or Joe Girardi.

Girardi and Cashman are in the final years of their contracts; Girardi has been the Yankees manager since 2008, while Cashman has been the general manager since 1998. Along with Girardi and Cashman, the rest of the Major-League coaching staff is set to enter free agency.

It’s typical of the Yankees to let contracts expire before they begin negotiations; the last contract extension the Yankees offered anyone in the organization was left fielder Brett Gardner, who is in the third year of a four-year deal.

The consensus is both Cashman and Girardi will return next season. Despite the Yankees not playing a playoff series since 2012, Hal Steinbrenner has applauded Girardi’s efforts of keeping the team in contention every single season. He’s even gone as far to say the organization ‘loves’ Girardi.

Cashman is responsible for the gigantic overhaul in the minor league system, making it one of the best farm systems in baseball. Because of Cashman’s management, Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Luis Severino, Clint Frazier, and Aaron Judge have all made an impact on the big league roster.

Cashman is also responsible for acquiring Didi Gregorius from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-way trade for Shane Greene, and Starlin Castro from the Chicago Cubs for Brendan Ryan; the Yankees initially traded Adam Warren and Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs for Castro but re-acquired them prior to the 2017 season.
