Yankees place Gary Sanchez on 10-day disabled list with groin strain

As anticipated, Yankees’ catcher Gary Sanchez has been placed on the 10-day disabled list with a right groin strain, the team announced on Monday.

Although groin strains typically take a few weeks to heal, the Yankees have yet to reveal the degree of Sanchez’s injury, which means he’ll likely be sidelined until after the All-Star break (July 16-19).

In a corresponding move, the Yankees summoned catcher Kyle Higashioka from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He will serve as the backup to Austin Romine, who happens to be hitting an exceptional .305 with four home runs and 20 RBI in 82 at-bats this season.

Sanchez hurt his groin during the 10th inning of Sunday’s loss against the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

While trying to beat out a double play, Sanchez initially felt pain in stride, and when he reached first base, he grimaced and grabbed his groin and hip area. Yankees’ manager Aaron Boone and trainer Steve Donohue walked out to check on Sanchez, who then left the field at a slow pace. Romine replaced Sanchez behind the plate.

Additionally, the Yankees recalled right-hander Giovanny Gallegos and optioned outfielder Clint Frazier to Triple-A.

The Yankees open a three-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Monday night at Citizen Bank Park.
