Yankees to promote Luis Severino

As the trade deadline has come and gone, the Yankees stood pat and kept their top prospects. It turns out that one of those top prospects will soon be making his first career major leauge start.

GM Brian Cashman told reporters that the next start for Luis Severino will be made in the majors. There has been no date set on when he will make his first start as the team will be “mapping out” the possible dates. An early guess would be August 4 against the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium.

The highly-touted prospect will not have an innings limit when called up, according to Cashman. The Yankees would have called up the hard throwing right-hander in Texas, but Diego Moreno‘s relief appearance led them to wait. There have been no plans to moved CC Sabathia to the bullpen in wake of Severino’s promotion.

Severino has been high on the Yankees board all season long, and other teams radar as well during the deadline. The Yanks made it clear they did not want to move Severino in any deal.

The 21-year-old pitcher has been outstanding in Triple-A this season, throwing to a 7-0 record with a 1.91 ERA in over 61 innings pitched. He has struck out 50 while walking just 17 batters.

The Yankees did not make any blockbuster deals at the deadline, but it appears they did not need to sell the farm to get a pitcher. Severino has been here the whole time, and now that the deadline has passed, the Bronx Bombers have the chance to show teams why they were not willing to give up their stud pitcher.
