Yankees Question of the Day – February 22, 2012

With the 2012 roster almost complete, the Yankees have just about solidified their pitching rotation, with the exception of the fifth spot. Obviously this can change anytime between now and the start of the regular season, but below is the expected rotation.

  1. C.C. Sabathia
  2. Hiroki Kuroda
  3. Ivan Nova
  4. Michael Pineda
  5. Phil Hughes/Freddy Garcia

Questions: Which pitcher would you select for the fifth rotation spot: Phil Hughes or Freddy Garcia? If you were Joe Girardi, is this the rotation you would go into opening day with? If not, how would you change it?

I have been a lifelong Yankee fan ever since my father took me to my first game when I was a child. We had seats in the first row, right next to the Yankees dugout. From that moment, I was hooked. I am constantly chatting about the Yankees on Twitter, so please follow me and join in the conversation (@brian_capozzi).

Hughes gets the nod for #5, for two reasons. First, we need to find out if the first half of 2010 was a fluke. If not, then having a #3 type in the fifth spot is great. If it was and Phil is a 5.00 ERA type pitcher, then you can move him to the pen or trade him. Second, Freddy wore down as the season progressed last year. By starting Phil, you can limit his innings so he’s rested when he’s really needed.
