Girardi: innings limit possible for Severino in ’16

Joe Girardi made his way down to Nashville for the Winter Meetings and met members of the media on Tuesday night to discuss the team.

One of the more interesting things that came up was Luis Severino and the fact that the 21-year-old could face an innings limit next season. Now, innings limits have become controversial over the past few months, especially with the crosstown rival Mets and especially with Matt Harvey. Yankee fans remember the “Joba Rules” all too well, so news of this will probably be met with some hesitation.

The Yankees said that they planned out Severino’s innings last year so that when he was brought up, he could pitch with no limitations. Now it appears the team wants to be extra careful with their young phenom. Severino has thrown 320.2 innings in his minor league career plus the 62.1 frames he threw at the big league level in ’15.

Brian Cashman hinted at this last week when he said Ivan Nova would probably be the most likely starter to give the team 200 plus innings next year.
