Yankees lay an egg vs BJ’s – The Bronx Pinstripes Show #33

Hopefully your NFL team won this weekend because the Yankees totally laid an egg vs the Blue Jays at the Stadium, falling to 3.5 games out in the division. Lousy pitching, bad situational hitting, and questionable managerial decisions highlighted the last week for the Yanks. They also got bad news off the field — Teixeira is done for the season, including the playoffs, and Eovaldi is shut down until at least the playoffs, if we make it that far. Scott and Andrew break down everything that has happened over the past week. They also read two mailbag submissions and play a voicemail.

The injury saga for Mark Teixeira is over — the third MRI showed a slight fracture in his leg and he is done for the season. This is a HUGE blow to the team, both offensively and defensively. We all have loved what Greg Bird has given them, but he is not Mark Teixeira at this point in his career. The Yankees are going to really miss Tex, who had been playing like an MVP for them. Without him, I’m not sure their offense is good enough to make a deep playoff run.

We also got some bad news regarding Nathan Eovaldi, who was shut down last week with arm fatigue. He will not throw a baseball for 2 weeks, and then ramp back up leading into the playoffs. If we see him pitch again this season it will be in October, assuming they can make it to the Division Series round. This injury came out of nowhere and took both Scott and I by surprise. Eovaldi, while he had been inconsistent, had been durable all season. Losing an arm like his this late in the season is tough because it bumps everyone else up a spot, including guys in the bullpen who we do not want to see pitch in big situations *cough Nick Rumbelow, James Pazos, and Bryan Mitchell cough*. This also raises the issue of when/if Eovaldi returns, how sharp is he going to be? Do we really want him on the mound in October pitching for the first time in a month? Those are rhetorical questions, if you couldn’t tell…

After two great comeback wins to end the Tampa series and start the Baltimore series, the Yankees offense then disappeared. We break down everything that went wrong vs Baltimore and Toronto in this episode. Full recaps can be found here: Series recap vs O’s

The weekend ended with a ceremony for ARod’s 3,000th hit. The celebration would have probably been more exciting if the Yankees had not just lost 5 games in a row, but regardless, Alex was honored.
