Spring Training Game 13: Pineda dominant in win

Detroit Tigers 1 — New York Yankees 4

In the home part of today’s New York Yankees split squad, the home team went on to win by a score of 4-1.

Michael Pineda made the start for today’s game and he had his best stuff going today. In the first inning, Pineda generated a fly out, strikeout and ground out. In the second inning, Pineda did even better by striking out all three batters that came to the plate. In the third and final inning of work by Pineda, he would generate two ground outs before a two-out walk to Andrew Romine gave the Detroit Tigers their first runner. Pineda would proceed to pickoff Romine with his brother Austin Romine behind the plate to end the third inning.

In three innings, Michael Pineda allowed no runs on one walk while striking out four.

In the bottom of the third inning, Mason Williams led off with a ringing line drive to right-center for a triple. Didi Gregorius would get the job done with a fly ball to right field, scoring Williams from third to give the Yankees the lead.

In the fourth inning, Dellin Betances took the mound and had some slight struggles today. Rajai Davis started the inning with a ground-rule double to right field. A balk and a ground out would tie the game up for the Tigers. Betances would get the final two outs around a second ground-rule double of the inning. Betances struggled with control of his pitches today and it was evident with the extra base power the Tigers showed at the plate.

In the sixth inning, Didi Gregorius, Chase Headley and Stephen Drew would all hit singles to load the bases with no outs. On a potential double play, shortstop Dixon Machado would make a wide throw that got by the Tigers’ first baseman Jordan Lennerton, allowing two runs to score and giving the Yankees back their lead.

In the seventh inning, Ramon Flores would hit a single but was out on a force, allowing Slade Heathcott to reach. Heathcott would steal two bases and would be allowed to score on the second balk of the game, giving the Yankees a three-run lead that they would not surrender.

Chase Headley had two hits in three at-bats tonight, including a double. After Betances’ difficult inning, Andrew Miller pitched a perfect inning of work with two strikeouts.
