Spring Training Game 15: Headley homers in win

Philadelphia Phillies 2 — New York Yankees 3

Nathan Eovaldi started the game for the Yankees against the visiting Philadelphia Phillies and was strong with a pair of strikeouts in the first inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Jacoby Ellsbury got the game started with a triple to center field. Where Brett Gardner was unsuccessful with a strikeout and Mark Teixeira walked, Brian McCann succeeded. The Yankees starting catcher hit a fly out to center field that was deep enough to plate the first run of the game, giving the Yankees a one-run lead.

After a first inning that featured two strikeouts and a ground out, Eovaldi would generate two ground outs around a strikeout in the second inning. Eovaldi would give up a one-out single in the third inning but generated a double play to erase the runner soon after.

In four scoreless innings, Nathan Eovaldi allowed two hits but no runs while striking out three.

After two scoreless innings by Chase Whitley, competing for the fifth spot in the starting rotation, David Carpenter took over in the seventh but struggled. After a walk to speedy outfielder Ben Revere, he would steal a base and a wild pitch by Carpenter allowed revere to reach third base with no outs. Carpenter would get one out but Domonic Brown would hit a single to right field and the game was tied.

Chase Headley would not let the tie last as he hit a solo home run to start the bottom of the seventh inning, his first of this spring. A pair of walks and a two-out single by Slade Heathcott would extend the Yankees lead to two.

In the eighth inning, Justin Wilson came in and would give up one run but that would be all the Phillies could muster in today’s Yankees win.

Alex Rodriguez was hitless in two at-bats today.
