Spring Training Game 20: Cave walks off for Yankees

Houston Astros 2 — New York Yankees 3

Michael Pineda got the start today against the visiting Houston Astros. After getting the first out of the inning, George Springer hit a triple to center field and Chris Carter would make it easy for the young outfielder to score. The two-run home run by Chris Carter put the Astros on the board with a two-run lead.

The Yankees threatened with two outs in the bottom of the first inning after a single by Carlos Beltran and a ground-rule double by Mark Teixeira, but the two runners in scoring position would be stranded.

In 3 2/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed two runs on four hits with no walks and six strikeouts.

The Yankees offense could not get a rally going, grounding into double plays in the fourth and fifth innings. While the Yankees could not get any offense going to this point in the game, the bullpen was holding the Astros at just two runs.

In the sixth inning, Andrew Miller took the mound and made quick work of the Astros by generating a ground out with a pair of swinging strikeouts. In the seventh inning, the second Andrew in the bullpen made an appearance. Andrew Bailey, attempting to make the comeback to the major league bullpen, would put together a strong inning of work. He hit one batter but got a pair of strikeouts and a ground out for a scoreless inning of work.

The bullpen continued strong work with a scoreless inning from Nick Rumbelow and Jacob Lindgren to keep the Astros at just two runs.

The bullpen provided 5 1/3 scoreless innings with just one hit and the Yankees came up to bat in the ninth inning in hopes of making the comeback. Nick Noonan and Aaron Judge started the ninth inning with a pair of singles. Eddy Rodriguez would hit a one-out double to left field, scoring two runs and a throwing error from left field allowed Rodriguez to reach third base. With one out, a sacrifice fly would win the game and Jake Cave did just that. A sacrifice fly to right field would bring home the winning run in walk-off fashion.

Win – Jacob Lindgren (1-0)

Loss – Will Harris (0-1)
