Spring Training Game 3: Austin homer wins it

New York Yankees 2 — Pittsburgh Pirates 1

Esmil Rogers could factor into the major league staff as a starting pitcher or a long reliever but today he was the starting pitcher to visit the Pittsburgh Pirates. Rogers went two innings and allowed two hits and struck out one. Chase Whitley followed with two scoreless innings of his own too, striking out one.

With two outs in the fifth inning, back-to-back doubles in the fifth inning by Chris Young and Garrett Jones scored the first run of the game.

In the sixth inning, reliever Cesar Vargas gave up a double to Willy Garcia and Jaff Decker tied the game with a single to left field. The third out would come on a single to right field with two runners on. Right fielder Tyler Austin fielded the line drive single in right field and got the lead runner, Decker, on a throw to home to keep the game tied.

How often does an outfielder throw a runner out at home then supply the game-winning run right after? In this recap, right now. In the eighth inning, Tyler Austin broke the tie with his first home run this Spring, a solo blast to left field.

Potential second baseman candidate Rob Refsnyder got two hits in three at-bats today including a double, but the young second baseman made a mental error, getting caught between second and third trying to stretch his double into a triple.

Win – Fred Lewis (1-0)

Loss – Deolis Guerra (0-1)

Save – Taylor Garrison (1)
