Spring Training Game 31: Pineda finishes spring strong

The Yankees were victorious at the home half of today’s split squad.

In the second inning, Garrett Jones started the inning with a single and attempted to score on a Stephen Drew single to center field but was out at home. For the Yankees, Michael Pineda had his final tune up start in preparation for the regular season.

Michael Pineda was dominant against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Through the first three innings, Pineda allowed four singles but kept it to just that. Pineda would pitch into the sixth inning, allowing a pair of singles, with the second scoring the first run of the game. He would exit and Andrew Miller would back him up easily with a double play to finish off the inning.

In 5 1/3 innings, Michael Pineda allowed one run on six hits without a walk and striking out six.

After giving up the first run of the game in the sixth inning, the Yankees would respond. Austin Romine started the tinning with a single. Garrett Jones would hit a double to put two in scoring position for Chris Young. The Yankees projected fourth outfielder would hit a single to center field, scoring two runs and giving the Yankees the lead. One out later, Rob Refsnyder would hit a run-scoring single to left field to extend the Yankees lead to two.

After the three-run sixth inning, the Yankees would go on the offense in the seventh inning. With one out, Greg Bird hit a single. Brian McCann would walk and Austin Romine hit a single to load the bases. Aaron Judge would hit a high chopper just over the first baseman for two runs, extending the Yankees lead to four. Ben Gamel would hit a sacrifice fly to complete a three-run seventh inning, giving the Yankees a 6-1 lead.

David Carpenter would allow a run to score in the eighth inning but the Yankees would hold on to keep the lead for the win.
