Spring Training Game 9: Headley perfect at the plate

New York Yankees 1 — Baltimore Orioles 3

The Yankees went to visit the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon and Chase Whitley was tasked with the start against the American League East champions. In the first inning, Whitley successfully escaped a tough spot with runners on the corners with one out. The Yankees right-hander got Adam Jones to pop out and Matt Wieters to ground out to keep the Orioles off the board.

In the third inning, Manny Machado got his second hit of the game, a double down the third base line but Whitley would overcome this too. After a walk, Chris Davis would ground into a double play and a ground out by Jones ended the inning yet again.

In three innings, Chase Whitley did not allow a run on two hits while walking three and striking out one.

After a scoreless inning by Esmil Rogers, Branden Pinder would be unable to keep the Orioles off the board in the fifth inning. After a single to Ryan Lavarnway and a wild pitch, Jonathan Schoop would hit a double that plated the first run of the game. Manny Machado would get his third hit of the game with a run-scoring single to center field, putting the Orioles ahead by two.

Chase Headley got his third hit of the game, a one-out double to deep right field but he would be stranded on the bases as the Yankees loaded the bases but were unable to make anything happen in the ideal situation.

The Orioles would plate one more run against the Yankees and left-handed reliever Chasen Shreve when Rey Navarro would take him deep with a solo home run.

The baby bomber bats within the Yankees farm have continued to be the talk of this Spring Training and another young talent would keep the Yankees from being shutout today. Prospect Gary Sanchez would hit a no-doubt solo home run to left field in the ninth inning to score the one and only run for the Yankees in today’s loss.

Win – Kevin Gausman (1-0)

Loss – Branden Pinder (0-1)
