Yankees Exhibition: Pettitte, Yankees appear season ready

New York Yankees 4 — Washington Nationals 2

Andy Pettitte struck out six over six innings in today’s 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals.

Robinson Cano is on top of his game as he got two hits, including a double, in today’s game. The Yankees got their offense started in the 4th inning on Kevin Youkilis’ sixth home run of the Spring to left field. Eduardo Nunez’s single of two hits brought in two runs. Then, Chris Stewart followed Nunez with a single to right field that created a bit of a jam for Stewart, caught between first and second base. Stewart likely expected Nunez to be sent home and this forced Nunez to attempt to score and succeed when the catcher, Kurt Suzuki, dropped the ball. The four-run 4th inning would be enough for the Yankees in today’s game.

Travis Hafner got a hit in today’s game and Vernon Wells got two, including a double.

Andy Pettitte started in his last Spring game before his regular season start. In six innings, Pettitte struck out six and allowed just two runs, one unearned. A throwing error by Kevin Youkilis allowed third baseman Ryan Zimmerman to reach second base in the 4th inning. Shortstop Ian Desmond would bring in Zimmerman on a single through to center field. Zimmerman would score one more time after reaching second in the 6th inning with a double. First baseman Adam LaRoche brought Zimmerman in with a single to center field. The ideal pitching situation was set into motion with Pettitte’s six sinnings.

Joba Chamberlain would get the 7th inning and threw a perfect inning with a strikeout. Setup man, David Robertson, got the 8th inning and was perfect, striking out one.

Then, to an ovation by the Washington crowd for what could be their last time seeing him; Mariano Rivera took the mound for the 9th inning with a two-run lead and a save opportunity. With a strikeout and a pair of groundouts, Mariano Rivera sealed the door shut like he has done so many times before.

Win – Andy Pettitte

Loss – Jordan Zimmermann

Save – Mariano Rivera
