Yankees Spring Training Game 11: Shutout in First Spring Night Game

Atlanta Braves 2 — New York Yankees 0

The first night of Spring Training didn’t go too bad despite losing 2-0 to the Atlanta Braves.

David Phelps started tonight and went 4 innings as he competes for a spot in the starting rotation. A leadoff double would go on to score in the 1st inning with some efficient outs. This run is the first run Phelps has given up in 9 innings this Spring. Joba Chamberlain pitched a perfect inning. Highly praised reliever Mark Montgomery had a difficult appearance in tonight’s game. After a leadoff single, an error on catcher, J.R. Murphy’s throw, let the baserunner advance to third, and would score on a balk by Montgomery. The 22-year old right hander would lose the strike zone and walk the next two batters he faced and would get an out before losing the strike zone one more time, hitting a batter and loading the bases before being replaced. Shawn Kelley, competing for a spot in the bullpen pitched a perfect 9th inning with two strikeouts.

The hottest hitter of Spring Training continues to make good contact. Brett Gardner got two more hits in tonight’s game, extending his hitting streak to 7 games and raising his average to .579. Ichiro Suzuki got the only extra base hit for the Yankees with a double into right field.
