Yankees Spring Training Game 24: Mitchell strong in win

New York Yankees 4 – Toronto Blue Jays 3

The Yankees made a visit to the Toronto Blue Jays and emerged victorious on defensive miscues.

For the Yankees, offense came instantly when Aaron Hicks took J.A. Happ deep to leadoff the game. Bryan Mitchell got the start today and was brilliant. Through the first three innings, only one ball left the infield as he struck out three and generated five ground outs.

In four innings, Bryan Michell allowed one hit without a walk and striking out four.

Reliever Anthony Swarzak came in for the fifth inning but struggled. After one out, David Adams got on base with a double. Josh Thole followed with a double of his own, tying the game at one. Jio Mier added a single, stole second and scored on a fly ball to left field that Aaron Hicks threw in poorly, giving the Blue Jays the lead.

With Happ still in the game after receiving the lead, the Yankees prevented a shut down inning in the sixth. Outfielder Cesar Puello led off with a ground-rule double down the right field line. One out later, Carlos Beltran and Alex Rodriguez hit a pair of singles that brought home Puello and tied the game at two. Following a wild pitch, Mark Teixeira grounded out to bring in the go-ahead run. Anthony Swarzak followed with a scoreless bottom of the sixth but reliever Diego Moreno could not say the same.

After getting the first out in the seventh inning, Diego Moreno gave up David Adams’ second double of the game. Then with two outs, Jio Mier tied the game with a run-scoring double.

The game remained tied until the ninth inning. Once the closer for the Jays, Roberto Osuna got the ninth inning and issued a leadoff walk to Deibinson Romero. After getting one out, catcher Tony Sanchez tried to pickoff Romero from first base, only to commit a throwing error, allowing Romero to advance to second base. After a ground out advances Romero to third, Sanchez committed a catching error, allowing Romero to score without the benefit of a hit, giving the Yankees the lead that they finished the game with.

Like yesterday’s game, Rob Refsnyder, manning third base, caught a bad hop that hit him in the face in the eighth inning. He exited the game.

Win – Branden Pinder
