Yankees Spring Training Game 9: Nova strong in Spring debut

Toronto Blue Jays 3 — New York Yankees 10

Ivan Nova pitched 2 scoreless innings in today’s 10-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, ending their 7-game losing streak…in Spring Training.

Brett Gardner should start the season right now. The speedy outfielder got 2 hits today, getting a hit in all 5 of his Spring Training games, to a .571 average. He would be one of two runs to score in the 3rd inning today. Chris Stewart, competing for the starting catcher’s job had a great day today at the plate and behind it. Stewart hit his first home run of the Spring with a blast to left field for a two-run home run in the 4th inning. In the 6th inning, he would display his defensive prowess when he caught a baserunner stealing second in the 6th inning. Top 5 prospect Tyler Austin brought in 2 runs, one on a bases-loaded walk and a double drilled into left field.

Ivan Nova made his Spring debut today and threw 2 innings of scoreless baseball. He induced 3 groundouts and struck out one with his curve. Relievers David Aardsma and Clay Rapada each gave up a run and a hit in their inning of work. Mark Montgomery, compared often to David Robertson, pitched an inning of baseball and gave up 1 run and got a strikeout.

Win – Clay Rapada

Loss – Kyle Lobstein
