Yankees Player of the Week: 6/22-6/28 Edition

In a 7-game span that saw the Yankees play sub-.500 baseball (3-4), there was one bright light in an otherwise dark, and dreary week. Brett Gardner continued his hot hitting at the dish by hitting .500 (13-for-26) since June 22, with 9 runs scored, 4 doubles, and a healthy .581 OBP. He drove in 6 runs to go with 2 balls in which Gardy went yardy. Gardner’s performance of the week was during the Yankees 11-8 loss to the Phillies on Monday night when he went 4-for-4 in 5 plate appearances with a HR, 3 RBI’s, and 2 runs scored. Entering the start of the week, Gardner was hitting .279 on the season, and labeled as one of the teams most consistent hitters. The week that followed was no exception as he was able to bump his season average to .300 on the nose.

While it was a tough week for the team, offensive production was definitely not the Yankees downfall this week as the team scored 37 runs (5.29 runs/game). That type of offense could put Papa John’s out of business! Pitching is the weak point for the Yankees right now and needs to be fixed before it spirals out of control and the team drops lower in the AL East standings.

Chris Young (.393 BA; 6 R; 11 H; 1 2B; 2 HR; 7 RBI; .433 OBP)
