On This Day in History | 1934

On this day 79 years ago Babe Ruth achieved one of his most memorable milestones, hitting his 700th career home run. The 480 foot blast off of Detroit’s Tommy Bridges helped propel the Bombers to a win 4-2 at Navin Field and move a 1/2 game ahead of Detroit in the pennant race. It was only the 14th home run of the season for the declining “Sultan,” but at a time when Lou Gehrig and Rogers Hornsby were the only players with 300 career home runs, it remains an awe-inspiring accomplishment. Bill Dickey chipped in with two RBIs and Red Ruffing pitched a complete game for his tenth win of the season.
