On this day in Yankees history – Tony Lazzeri hits 2 grand slams in 1 game

On May 24, 1936, in a game against the Athletics, Yankees’ second baseman Tony Lazzeri became the first Major League player to hit two grand slams in one game as the Yanks annihilate the A’s 25-2. The two grand salamis also help Lazzeri set an American League record for most RBIs in a game with 11.

That month he also set records for most home runs in three consecutive games (6) and four consecutive games (7). He would also hit a grand slam in the World Series that year, only the second in Series history. He is one of only 14 players to hit for the natural cycle (hitting in order: single, double, triple, homer) and the only player to complete a natural cycle with a grand slam.

In his 11 years in pinstripes, he averaged 79 runs, 14 home runs, 96 RBIs and 12 stolen bases, including seven seasons with over 100 RBIs and five seasons batting .300 or higher. The Yankees won six AL pennants and five World Series championships in those 11 years.
