Down on the farm

Surprise, surprise, the New York Yankees lost another ugly one last night. I could breakdown the Big League club, what’s going wrong, and what they should do at the deadline. But what’s the point? The Yankees’ woes and trade rumors have been beaten into the ground all month, so I’m going to focus on something positive. While things may have been ugly last night in the Bronx, things down on the farm were not.

Down in Tampa, the Class-A Advanced Yankees finished a three game sweep of the Brevard County Manatees to improve to 4-2, 46-29. The Yanks entered the ninth trailing 1-2 and quickly loaded up the bags. Vicente Conde stepped to the plate, and on an 0-2 pitched sent the ball into the stands. Walk-off grand slam. Jorge Mateo continues to fly, stealing 26 bags in 70 games to go along with his eight doubles and triples.

The Tampa Yankees aren’t the only ones doing right by the Yankee name while the team in the Bronx sullies it. The Staten Island Yankees rattled off five runs in the first inning against the Hudson Valley Renegades last night on route to a 12-6 win. They are now 10-2 on the season. Man, five runs in the first inning. The Big League team can’t score that many in nine innings.

Moving on up the line, the Trenton Thunder had themselves a nice night last night, as well. They played Boston’s affiliate Portland Sea Dogs, complete with Yoan Moncada, and came away with the W. The Thunder entered the ninth inning down 5-9. After a walk, a fly ball, a wild pitch, a single and a pinch hit homer, they clawed their way back to tie it up. Tyler Wade stepped in the box with two outs, and what does he do? He hits a walk-off inside the park home run. When’s the last time you saw something even remotely exciting like that in the Bronx? The Thunder are now 49-29 and six games out of first in their division.

Last but not least, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, aka all the players that should be in the Bigs. Tyler Austin went 3-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle. He brought in three runs and scored two of his own to improve his average to .317. The RailRiders beat the Syracuse Chiefs 6-4 to improve to 47-32, and hold a one game lead in their division. They have won eight of their last 10, and won their sixth consecutive series. Gary Sanchez and Aaron Judge continue to rake while the Yankees manage to push one run across and sit at 37-39.

It’s safe to say the Yankees’ Minor League teams are way more exciting (and cheaper) to watch.
