Yankees game 148: Exit Harvey, enter offense

New York Yankees 11 – New York Mets 2

The Yankees were silenced for five innings, then Matt Harvey was removed from the game.

Matt Harvey started for the Mets and he put any alarms about his innings on silent when he set down the Yankees in order, including two strikeouts. CC Sabathia looked to match zeroes with Harvey but struggled out of the gate. Ruben Tejada opened the game with a double to the left field corner. David Wright followed with a double into right center, scoring Tejada and putting the Mets ahead early. Sabathia responded by striking out Yoenis Cespedes and Juan Uribe. He loaded the bases on back-to-back walks but a pop out in foul territory kept the damage to one.

For both Sabathia and Harvey, they settled down. Matt Harvey allowed three base runners, only one on a hit, over five innings while he struck out seven. For CC Sabathia, three Mets reached base, one on an intentional walk, but none came across to score. The difference between the two? Matt Harvey was removed from the game after five.

After five innings of one-hit baseball by Harvey, reliever Hansel Robles came in. On a quick pitch, Jacoby Ellsbury hit a ground ball up the middle where Daniel Murphy threw to first but the wide throw allowed Ellsbury to advance to second after his single. On the next batted ball, a bunt back to Robles, the throw to third base, trying to get Ellsbury, went in and out of David Wright’s glove for the second error in as many batters. With two of the faster batters in the lineup on the bases, Carlos Beltran hit a double to right center, scoring two and getting the Yankees the lead. After two strikeouts and a walk, Dustin Ackley got a hold of a 1-0 pitch and put it over the wall in right center for a three-run home run.

Reliever Sean Gilmartin needed to come in to get the final out but by the time it was recorded, the Yankees put five runs on the scoreboard.

After CC Sabathia pitched a scoreless sixth inning, the Yankees got another run on a bases loaded walk. With the sizable lead, CC Sabathia was given the rest of the night off. In six innings, CC Sabathia allowed one run on five hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Tonight featured another solid outing by Sabathia. Positive signs for a rotation that lost another arm.

Nick Rumbelow pitched a scoreless seventh inning and the Yankees got more offense, this time from a Baby Bomber. After scoring one run thanks to a walk from Alex Rodriguez and a single from Jacoby Ellsbury that scored pinch-runner Rico Noel, Brian McCann hit a single to score another run. Gregory Bird provided the big blow, a three-run home run to left center field, extending the score to 11-1, for the “big brother.”

The Mets added a run in the eighth inning against Chris Capuano but the crafty lefty and reliever Nick Goody finished off the remainder of a decisive win to take the in-city series with the local New York Mets.

Win – CC Sabathia (5-9)

Loss – Hansel Robles (4-3)
