New York Yankees 7 — Minnesota Twins 4

The debut of a Yankee signals the end of the five-game losing streak.

In the bottom half of the first inning against Masahiro Tanaka, Brian Dozier opened with a single and would score on a double that Chris Parmelee put into the right field corner. Parmelee would be tagged out between second and third by…Brett Gardner. Score that a double with a run batted in with a 9-4-2-5-7 put out…

Through the first four innings, Phil Hughes gave up one hit but he faced the minimum number of batters from his former team. The Twins would score a second run for Hughes but the Yankees would see two brief flashes of the Phil Hughes that Yankees fans were used to.

In the fifth inning, Mark Teixeira would defy the shift with a single to left field and Brian McCann would defeat the shift with a single of his own to right field. With two on and no outs, Carlos Beltran would hit a three-run home run into right center field to give the Yankees a 3-2 lead. After getting the first out of the inning, Zelous Wheeler would get his first hit of the game, a solo home run to deep left center field where the bullpens are.

The recently called up Yankees rookie provided an insurance run for the American League leader in wins.

After giving up a run in the sixth inning, Masahiro Tanaka would give up a fourth run in the seventh inning. This run was significant as it was the most runs he has given up in his major league career and it also snapped his quality start streak, tying him with Steve Rogers at 16 quality starts.

In the seventh inning, the Yankees would get some more insurance runs to back up Tanaka with a one-out walk, single and run-scoring double to left field. Phil Hughes would exit with two on and one out. Brett Gardner would hit a single toΒ  bring in one run and Derek Jeter would ground out to bring in another. With the run scoring on a ground out, the line on Phil Hughes’ night was done.

In 6.1 innings, Phil Hughes allowed seven runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out six. He gave up two home runs. Sounds like the Phil Hughes the Yankees let go.

With plenty of rest, Dellin Betances got the call in the eighth inning to replace Tanaka. In seven innings, Masahiro Tanaka allowed a season-high four runs on a season-high nine hits while striking out a season-low three while walking none. Dellin Betances would proceed to be vintage Betances, striking out two in a scoreless inning.

With a three-run lead, David Robertson would get to see work in a save opportunity. The Yankees closer would need 25 pitches but he would strike out three batters, all looking but walked one in a very harmless inning to snap the five-game losing streak.

Win – Masahiro Tanaka (12-3)

Loss – Phil Hughes (8-5)

Save – David Robertson (19)
