UPDATE: Yankees have optioned Solarte to Triple-A, designated infielder Dean Anna for assignment to make room for Wheeler

Yankees have said they’re not making roster moves just for the sake of it, but maybe that has changed after their fifth straight loss. Donnie Collins of the Scranton Times-Tribune is reporting that Zelous Wheeler will be getting called up and be joining the team on in Minnesota. Nothing is official and no corresponding moves have been made yet, but everyone making the quick assumption that Yangervis Solarte has worn out his welcome with the club. When you take a step back and look at it, the move makes sense. Solarte has become a liability on the field and is mired in an 3-for-41 slump, that includes going 0-for-4 in today’s game.

Wheeler on the other hand is holding onto a .300/.368/.469 slash, with seven homers and 31 RBIs. While the majority of his 65-games have been played at third base and shortstop he does have some versatility in the field, playing some second base and right field with the RailRiders. Wheeler was signed as a minor league free agent this past offseason, and has been a pleasant surprise so far this season, flying under the radar in Scranton.

Either way some moves will have to be made to get Wheeler on the 40-man and 25-man rosters, but it sounds like Solarte will fall victim unfortunately. Not sure if they will just designate him or try and make some moves to keep him with the club in some capacity, have to wait and see.
