AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees
Michael O’Connor and D.J. Mitchell split last night’s game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, combining to shut out the Charlotte Knights 2-0. O’Connor, who started, allowed just three hits while striking out five batters in four innings. Mitchell would then enter in relief and pitch the final five innings. Fresh off his major league stint, Mitchell would allow four hits while striking out five. It was Mitchell who would be rewarded with the victory, his sixth of the season. The offense was limited in this one for the Yankees. Brandon Laird started off the scoring in the third inning, lining a single to left field and bringing home Chris Dickerson. Later, in the fifth, Dickerson would score again, this time as a result of a Corban Joseph sacrifice fly.
AA: Trenton Thunder
Neil Medchill’s sixth inning home run was the difference maker in this one, as he scored the game’s only run, giving Trenton a 1-0 victory. All in all, the Thunder scratched together just five hits on the day, with two coming off the bat of Addison Maruszak. Shaeffer Hall started on the mound for the Thunder, tossing seven shutout innings as he dominated the Phillies. Hall allowed seven hits and a walk on the evening while striking out five batters. After Hall left, Ryan Pope and Jon Meloan would combine to finish the last two innings, with Meloan collecting his fourth save of the season along the way.
High-A: Tampa Yankees
Despite Mason Williams recording three hits and crossing the plate three times, the Tampa Yankees fell to the Bradenton Marauders 4-3 on Thursday night. Adonis Garcia and Zach Wilson both contributed multiple hits as well, with Garcia bringing Williams home twice. Shane Greene turned in a good performance on the mound, but it just wasn’t enough. Greene had allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits in six innings of work. He would strike out three, but not factor into the decision. Instead, that would fall to Manuel Barreda, who allowed two runs in as many innings en route to his third loss of the season.
Class A: Charleston RiverDogs
The RiverDogs fell to Kannapolis on Thursday night 7-4 as Philip Wetherell gave up four runs in 2 1/3 innings in his first start (though 29th appearance) of the season. Wetherell was relieved by William Oliver, who wasn’t much better, giving up three runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched. Cito Culver, Tyson Blaser, and Eduardo Sosa all had multiple hits on the evening, though Ben Gamel was the one to drive in two of the RiverDogs’ four runs. Ali Castillo managed to get on base in four of five trips to the plate, with a hit and three walks to his credit.
The Rehab Report
Eduardo Nunez: Nunez went 1-for-3 today while playing five innings for the GCL Yankees. Nunez blasted a home run in his final at bat after grounding out to shortstop in each of his first two at-bats.
Austin Romine: Romine struggled a bit today, going 0-for-3 at the plate with a strikeout. Additionally, he allowed two runners to steal on him before being pulled after five innings.
Walter Ibarra: Ibarra went 1-for-2 with a single on the day. He would play just three innings as he works his way back from injury.
Zachary Nuding: Zach Nuding started, pitching the first four innings in today’s game. He would allow one run on two hits and three walks, while striking out only one hitter.
