Ways the Yankees can clinch a postseason berth tonight

The New York Yankees can possibly clinch their playoff spot tonight, but they will need some help to do so.

First things first, the Yankees need to win their game tonight, as they take on the Boston Red Sox in the third game of a four game set at Yankee Stadium. Having lost two straight to the Red Sox, the Bronx Bombers will send Masahiro Tanaka to the mound, hoping that he can help get them back in the win column.

If the Yankees are able to get back in the win column tonight, they will need some help in clinching their playoff berth. Out of four teams fighting for their respective playoff spot (Minnesota Twins, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, and Los Angeles Angels), the Yankees need at least two of them to lose today in order to clinch.

Here’s the match ups for these four teams today with the probable pitchers:

Minnesota at Cleveland (Game 1, doubleheader)- 4:10 EST (Kyle Gibson vs. Carlos Carrasco)

Minnesota at Cleveland (Game 2, doubleheader)- 7:10 PM EST (Mike Pelfrey vs. Cody Anderson)

Los Angeles vs. Oakland- 7:05 PM EST (Garrett Richards vs. Barry Zito)

Texas vs. Detroit- 8:05 PM EST (Yovani Gallardo vs. Matt Boyd)

Houston at Seattle- 10:10 PM EST (Scott Kazmir vs. TBD)

Although the Yankees have to take care of business themselves, it doesn’t hurt to do a little scoreboard watching. If two or more of these playoff contending teams lose today, it only helps the Yankees’ chances of returning to the postseason, as the team looks to return to the postseason for the first time since 2012.
