April 9th in Yankees History

April 9, 1996

It was a cold, snowy Opening Day in the Bronx. The Yankees defeated the Kansas City Royals, 7-3. Starter Andy Pettitte allowed 3R in 6.1IP (6H, 2BB), earning the win. Newcomers Joe Girardi, replacing Mike Stanley, and Tino Martinez, replacing Don Mattingly, get booed during pregame introductions. Girardi goes 1-for-5 batting in the second spot and rookie shortstop Derek Jeter goes 1-for-3 hitting ninth.

I have been a lifelong Yankee fan ever since my father took me to my first game when I was a child. We had seats in the first row, right next to the Yankees dugout. From that moment, I was hooked. I am constantly chatting about the Yankees on Twitter, so please follow me and join in the conversation (@brian_capozzi).

Here’s another fact from this game: it was the first time the grounds crew did their now-famous YMCA dance. Gotta love the Yanks.
