Preview: Yankees at Blue Jays (6/25/14)

It’s up to Hiroki Kuroda (4-5, 4.23 ERA) to salvage a win out of the series against Drew Hutchison (5-5, 3.86 ERA). Kuroda took a no hitter into the sixth inning Friday against Baltimore before giving up four hits and two runs in the inning. He had six strikeouts with just one walk in the no decision.

Hutchison had some control problems during his last start and his defense didn’t help either, running up his pitch count. He was forced out in the fifth after 99 pitches and allowing four runs on six hits against the Bombers

The Yankees are still trying to find their bats after having just six runs in three games against Baltimore. “I think over time, things usually balance out,” Joe Girardi said. “It would be different if you had one or two guys that were struggling, and you had seven guys hitting .300. You keep the lineup the same, but the more consistent hitters are probably getting the most at bats. Some guys are capable of giving us some more, and you know they will, and you just have to ride it out.”

Carlos Beltran had been playing some light catch so he could return to the outfield, but his throwing program was shut down after feeling tightness in his right forearm. “It has to be compensation for an elbow injury or something that I’m doing,” Beltran said. “I was feeling pretty good on the throwing program, but the forearm was really tight.”

Dellin Betances lowered his ERA to 1.43 with two shutout innings of relief Tuesday.
