Romine struggled mightily with his bat this spring. He hit just .182 with one extra base hit in 18 games. Romine has no options left so therefore the Yankees had no choice but to release him.
Romine was once regarded as a top Yankee prospect but never panned out. His struggles opened the door for Murphy who hit .250 this spring but provides more with the bat than Romine does.
Murphy wins the final spot on the roster and baseball finally returns to the Bronx on Monday. It is officially baseball season.
