Brandon Drury finally discovers cause for his migraines, blurred vision
It's been two weeks since Brandon Drury landed on the 10-day disabled list with severe migraines and blurred vision, but the Yankees' new third baseman is making good progress in his recovery, thanks to new information revealed by team doctors.
On Saturday at Yankee Stadium, Drury told the New York Daily News that his puzzling brain issue was caused by an irritated tendon running up his neck and into his head. The Yankees' staff of doctors has created a treatment plan for Drury, which is supposed to alleviate pressure in his neck.
According to the report, Drury, 25, said this treatment is continuing to improve his vision.
“We’re doing everything we can to really free that up, clear that up,” said Drury, who participated in full pregame workouts (running, ground balls, batting practice) on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. “Now it’s just a matter of time and a matter of days of doing what I can to get this thing feeling right so I can get back out there.
“I feel pretty close [to returning]. I want to keep doing some more stuff these next couple days and do my treatment and keep getting on the field and keep feeling improvement."
The Daily News also notes that Drury may need a short rehab assignment in the minors before rejoining the big league club. Yankees' manager Aaron Boone said this assignment could come as soon as next week if Drury has no setbacks.
“He’s got to continue to progress,” Boone told the Daily News. “But I think he’s very, very close to making a decision one way or the other whether we want to send him out [on a rehab assignment] and start getting a couple of games in and some at-bats. I do think that decision is potentially really close. Again, hopefully he just gets through these next couple days and we’re in that position.”
In just eight games (23 at-bats), Drury has hit .217 with one home run and four RBI. During the time he's missed, rookie third baseman Miguel Andujar has picked up the slack. The 23-year-old is slashing .321/.345/.786 with two homers, five doubles, a triple, and six RBI in his last seven games.
Earlier this April, Drury told reporters that he's dealt with migraines and impaired vision for years.
