The 20 year old Venezuelan is a righty and had a 4.53 ERA for the Padres’ AA affiliate in San Antonio last season., notching three wins and one loss. His fastball is pretty average, usually around 89-91 MPH, however, Herrera has shown that he can be a workhorse and go deep into games. His fastball had some movement, and cuts a bit when he subtracts its speed. Pirela bounced around between the majors and AAA Scranton, batting .230 in the big leagues and only making a minor impact as a fill-in player. Pitching is a major concern for the Yankees’ rotation, and although Herrera is only 20, he has some promise and could help the Yankees sooner if not later. This could be a sign of things to come during the winter as Brian Cashman attempts to strengthen the rotation through trades due to a weak free agent pitching market.
