Emergency appendectomy ends Prado's season; Pirela promoted

With Martin Prado's season cut short, rookie Jose Pirela has an opportunity to impress.

One of the hottest bats currently on the Yankees has his season cut short.

Martin Prado, the versatile infielder and outfielder, acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks underwent emergency appendectomy on Tuesday.

Overall this season, Martin Prado, 30, hit .282/.321/.412 with 26 doubles, 12 home runs and 58 runs batted in. While with the Diamondbacks, he played second base and third base.

As a Yankee in 37 games, Prado hit .316/.336/.541 with nine doubles and seven home runs. He drove in 16 runs. His versatility was much more prevalent as he played second and third while playing left and right in the outfield too.

While his loss is another painful one for the Yankees to suffer, he will be a Yankee next season as he is still under contract. And with injury, opportunity arises.

With Prado on the disabled list, the Yankees have purchased the contract of Jose Pirela. The 24-year-old Pirela also displays a versatile defensive skill set as he has played every position in the field except for third base this season. But he has played third base as recent as 2012.

In 130 games with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, Jose Pirela is hitting .305/.351/.441 with 21 doubles, 11 triples and 10 home runs. It is unclear where the Yankees intend to play Pirela but Yankees fans could be pleasantly impressed by what this young man brings to the majors.
