Game 53: Mets take the Subway Series

Yankees fall in full Subway Series with tonight's 3-1 loss to the New York Mets.

The Yankees turned to Vidal Nuno to attempt at taking one of the four against the cross-town rival New York Mets. Usually known for control and limiting walks, Nuno walked outfielder Lucas Duda to start the second inning. This would come back to haunt the left-hander as outfielder Marlon Byrd would follow with a blast to the second deck in left field, putting the Mets ahead by two.

On paper, the 6.34 ERA of Mets starter Dillon Gee seemed like easy pickings for the Yankees batters. However, tonight and this series show why the game isn't played on paper. Robinson Cano got a hold of one of Gee's pitches, going deep for his 14th home run of the season.

Outside of the home run, Gee dominated the Yankees offense. At one point, Gee had six consecutive strikeouts. On Gee's 88th pitch, shortstop Reid Brignac would strikeout looking at a curveball, the career-high 12th strikeout of his night.

Through 7.1 innings, Dillon Gee allowed one run on four hits with just 88 pitches.

In six innings, Vidal Nuno kept the Yankees close. On three hits, Nuno gave up just the two runs. Reliever Shawn Kelley would take over in the seventh and would strikeout the side. He would get an out in the eighth and hand the game over to Boone Logan for one batter. A strikeout and an intentional walk of Mets captain David Wright. Joba Chamberlain would be the next to emerge from the bullpen and a wild pitch would prove to be huge. The wild pitch moves runners over to second and third then designated hitter John Buck would hit a roller down the third base line that would stay fair and allow the third run for the Mets to score.

The Yankees offense has been dreadful recently. This fifth loss in a row is a direct association to the offense. The Yankees were often praised and developed a reputation for patience and long, drawn out at-bats that would usually involve walks. The Yankees have not had a walk since Monday. The sweep of the Subway Series stings locally but the Yankees will aim to bounce back and come out strong against the AL East leading Boston Red Sox in the next series.
