Congratulations to Yangervis Solarte on being BronxPinstripes.com 1st Man of the Week for 2014. If this was a surprise to anybody out there, you must have been living under a rock for the past month. The Yankees, along with their fans, had no idea who would be able to fill the shoes of Alex Rodriguez at 3rd base when spring training started in mid-February. Six weeks later, after a 3-3 start to the 2014 season, Yangervis Solarte has taken New York by storm. After a scorching Spring Training, many fans, including myself, wondered whether or not the 26 year old would bring his hot spring into the regular season. Not only did Solarte remain on fire to start the 2014 season, he has been carrying the Yankees offense on his back.
Through the first 6 games of the season, Solarte is hitting a solid .471, with 4 doubles, while driving in 5 RBI's in 17 AB's. An offense that looked dead during their first series in Houston, was given a new life thanks to the clutch at-bats of Solarte. While his hot-hitting will eventually die down; he will continue to help the team both offensively and defensively; continuing to be an asset at a position that raised a lot of questions during the offseason.
Honorable Mention: Ichiro Suzuki (.462 BA; 1 SB; .538 SLG) Masahiro Tanaka (1-0; 2.57 ERA; 7 IP; 8 K's; 0.857 WHIP) Jacoby Ellsbury (.333 BA; 3 SB; .417 OBP) Michael Pineda (0-1; 1.50 ERA; 6 IP; 5 K's; 0.833 WHIP)
