Preview: Yankees vs Rays (9/11/14)
Michael Pineda (3-4, 1.80 ERA) and Alex Cobb (9-7, 2.83 ERA) close out the Yankees homestand in the rubber match. His last time out against the Royals, Pineda became the second Yankees pitcher in the last 10 years to lose a game in which he did not allow an earned run. "We just really never got anything going," Joe Girardi said after that game. Pineda has allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his nine starts this season.
Cobb threw seven scoreless innings in his last start against the O's, his 11th straight start having allowed two runs or fewer. He beat the Yankees in his only start against them this season, holding them scoreless over 7 1/3 innings on August 15th. "It's a cool streak," Cobb said. "I don't look too much into it because some of those games were like four innings and weren't that great."
Masahiro Tanaka is going to throw an instructional league game at the Minor League facility in Tampa on Monday. If he gets through that he could be activated from the 60 day disabled list, setting him up to potentially pitch during the Yanks final homestand against the Blue Jays or Orioles.
The Yankees will hold a pregame ceremony in remembrance of September 11th, 2001, including a moment of silence. On field personnel, players, coaches and umpires, will wear an American flag patch embroidered on the side of their caps. Notes on the game Brett Gardner and Carlos Beltran could be done for the season. The Yankees are 4 1/2 games behind the Tigers for the second American League Wild Card spot. 7:05 pm on Yes.
