Winter Meetings: Yankees interested in Jose Fernandez

According to Jayson Stark of ESPN.com, the Yankees have been in touch with the Miami Marlins about a possible trade involving Jose Fernandez.

According to Stark, the Yankees, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks, are doing background work on Fernandez, and have recently been in contact with the Marlins about the availability of the right-hander. General Manager Brian Cashman has stated that the club is looking to acquire young, controllable starting pitchers this offseason, and Fernandez, 23, would definitely fit that bill. As he is only 23-years-old, Fernandez is not set to hit the free agent market until after the 2019 season. Tommy John  surgery has forced the right-hander to miss parts of the last two seasons, but his overall numbers are still very impressive. In 47 career starts, Fernandez has posted a 22-9 record with a 2.40 ERA, and was awarded the Rookie of the Year Award in 2013. If a deal is eventually agreed upon, the price tag for Fernandez will definitely be very high. Andrew Marchand of ESPN.com suggests that the Yankees should make a trade happen for the All-Star pitcher, and suggests that the team might have to part with one of their top prospects to get it done.
