Yankees acquire RHP Michael King from Marlins
The Yankees have made yet another trade on Monday, as the 40-man roster crunch deadline looms. According to a press release from the organization, New York has traded infielder Garrett Cooper and left-handed pitcher Caleb Smith to the Miami Marlins in exchange for right-hander Michael King. The Yankees also received $250,000 in international signing bonus pool money.

King, 22, spent all of 2017 with Single A Greensboro, going 11-9 with a 3.14 ERA over 149 innings in 26 games (25 starts). He tied for second in wins amongst all South Atlantic League pitchers, and placed second in ERA and strikeouts/walk ratio (5.05). King, a native of Rochester N.Y., was originally drafted by the Marlins in the 13th round of the 2016 amateur draft out of Boston College. Cooper, 26, made his MLB debut with the Yankees after spending four-and-a-half years in the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Cooper appeared in 13 games at first base, and hit .270/.330/.430 with six RBI. Smith, 26, also made his MLB debut with New York in 2017. He was originally drafted by the Yankees back in 2013 in the 14th round. Smith appeared in nine games (two starts) in '17, and went 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA over 18.2 innings. The international signing bonus pool money the Yankees received from the Marlins will presumably be put towards signing Shohei Ohtani if he's posted. According to Joel Sherman, the Yankees now have $3.5 million to spend on international free agents this winter. Only the Texas Rangers have more with $3.53 million. It's also worth noting that Derek Jeter's first trade as an owner is with the Yankees.
