Yankees Game 102: Nova struggles out of the gate in loss
Ivan Nova surrenders 5 runs over 4.2 innings and the offense struggles to find the big hit in tonight's New York Yankees loss.
New York Yankees 1 – Tampa Bay Rays 5
Following a day off, the Yankees went to Tampa Bay to start a three-game series.
Jake Odorizzi worked around a pair of one-out singles in the first inning but Ivan Nova struggled right out of the gate. In the first inning, Ivan Nova fell behind in the count to Logan Forsythe and he paid for that with a lead off solo home run. Nova appeared to have rebounded by retiring the next two batters but Corey Dickerson caught Nova with the long ball as well when he took him deep to right center for a solo home run too.
Nova worked around a two-out hit batter and walk in the second inning but surrendered a run in the third inning. After a lead off triple and a walk, a run scored on a force out at second. Nova pitched a perfect fourth inning but he could not finish the fifth inning. A pair of doubles led off the inning as Brad Miller led off with two bases and Evan Longoria brought him around to score with a double of his own. After getting the first out, Steve Pearce reached on an infield single and that signaled Nova's end.
In 4 1/3 innings, Ivan Nova allowed five runs on six hits with three walks and three strikeouts.
Chad Green loaded the bases upon entering the game with a walk and gave up a run on a sacrifice fly but managed to finish off the inning. In relief, Chad Green pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings with one hit and five strikeouts but he walked three batters too.
The Yankees could not solve Jake Odorizzi. He allowed six hits but none of them came around to score. In the eighth inning, the Yankees made the most of a lead off walk. With one on and two outs, Brian McCann and Mark Teixeira go against the shift with singles to left field. The single by Teixeira scored the Yankees first and only run of the game.
Chase Headley and pinch-hitter Alex Rodriguez got on base with a pair of singles but closer Alex Colome got the last two outs of the game to end the night with a loss for the Yankees.
