Yankees Game 123: Offense silenced in finale at Anaheim
Offense were held silent as Chad Green held the Angels to one run but the New York Yankees could not find the important hit to bring home any runs in today's loss.
New York Yankees 0 – Los Angeles Angels 2
After winning the first two games definitively, the Yankees looked to start their West coast trip with a sweep of the Angels.
Chad Green returned to the mound after his career-best start and tried to carry it over into today's start but ran into two-out trouble in the first inning. Albert Pujols reached with a two-out single and a walk of C.J. Cron put him in scoring position. Andrelton Simmons made it a 1-0 game with a single to left field and put the Yankees in an early deficit.
Angels starter Jhoulys Chacin set the Yankees down in order through the first two innings but Mark Teixeira looked to get the Yankees started with a double to lead off the third inning. Unfortunately, after a strikeout of Chase Headley, Aaron Hicks hit a single to put runners on the corners and Brett Gardner ended any threat with an inning-ending double play.
In the fourth inning, Didi Gregorius and Starlin Castro kept the inning alive with a pair of two-out singles. A walk of Brian McCann put Chacin face-to-face with a bases-loaded threat but Mark Teixeira flew out to center field to end the inning without a run crossing the plate.
Jacoby Ellsbury helped keep the game within striking distance when he robbed Pujols of a home run in the fifth inning.
In six innings, Chad Green allowed one run on five hits with one walk and five strikeouts.
Anthony Swarzak pitched a scoreless inning of relief but Adam Warren could not say the same in the eighth inning.
With one out, Warren walked Mike Trout but Gary Sanchez continued to grow his reputation behind the plate when he caught Trout stealing second base. Unfortunately seeing-eye singles by Pujols, Cron and a run-scoring single by Simmons added an insurance run for the Angels.
The Yankees were set down in order by Angels closer Fernando Salas and the sweep was prevented by the Angels.
