New York Yankees 1 – Detroit Tigers 2
The New York Yankees makes the way to visit the MLB-best Detroit Tigers to open a four-game series.
CC Sabathia started tonight’s game and was in cruise control. In the first inning, Ian Kinsler would hit a one-out single but Miguel Cabrera would ground into an around-the-horn double play, ending the inning.
Opposing Sabathia was Alfredo Simon and the Yankees would produce the first run of the game.
In the second inning, Mark Teixeira hit a barely out of the park solo home run to lead off the inning. The home run was the fourth of the season for the Yankees first baseman and the first as a left-handed batter this season.
Over the course of the game, not only would the sizable lefty be efficient and effective, the defense was strong in support of him.
In the second inning, Brett Gardner would rob Victor Martinez of extra bases with a running grab just shy of the wall. Sabathia would give up a hit in the third inning to Jose Iglesias but picked him off. In the fourth inning, Kinsler would get on base in front of Cabrera but Sabathia would generate another around-the-horn double play from one of the best hitters in the game. Victor Martinez would be robbed of another hit by a long run and slide from Jacoby Ellsbury to right-center field.
Through the first six innings, CC Sabathia would face the minimum with the assistance of three double plays. Unfortunately, the Yankees offense would not be able to generate more than one run off of Simon.
In the seventh inning, Rajai Davis led off with a single. Ian Kinsler would fly out to left field, allowing Davis to advance to second base. After a third ground out by Cabrera, Victor Martinez received an intentional walk to create a force out. J.D. Martinez would go against the Yankees’ script, hitting a single just off the glove of shortstop Didi Gregorius, slowing it down enough to score the tying run. Yoenis Cespedes followed the tying base hit with a go-ahead single to turn the game in the Tigers’ favor.
In the eighth inning, Chase Headley hit a single and advanced on a sacrifice. Didi Gregorius would hit a single to shallow center field. Despite a bobble of the ball by Rajai Davis, Headley would not score on the shallow single, putting runners on the corners with one out.
Former Yankee Joba Chamberlain came in for relief and was able to end the run-scoring threat, The Yankees would go down in order against closer Joakim Soria and the Yankees lose a tough one to swallow to open the series.
In an eight inning, complete game effort, CC Sabathia allowed two runs on seven hits while walking three and striking out five.
